SEO – Search Engine Optimisation
Whether you are a designer, programmer or a website owner / web marketer, you must have heard the term SEO used in some context or the other, at some point of time.
It has been observed that those individuals, who don’t know about SEO, want to gain knowledge about it and start utilising it while those people who already know about SEO are interested to further increase their knowledge on the subject. Such is the Power of SEO!
What is SEO?
The term SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimisation or Search Engine Optimizers. To put it simply, SEO primarily refers to those strategies or techniques which are commonly used to improve the rankings of websites on Search Engines.
As a rule, websites that rank higher up on search engine result pages for particular search terms or keywords get better quality traffic, in higher volumes and generally do better as compared to other websites that rank lower. This is the reason why web marketers across the globe spend considerable time and efforts in using legitimate SEO tactics to optimise their websites for particular keywords, their main aim being to direct well targeted traffic to their websites through organic or natural search engine listings.
SEO Basics
While there are a number of Search Engines used by web surfers to search for relevant information on products and services, Google is considered to be the undoubted leader in the field. Most people attempt to optimise their website for Google so that they may appear in local, image or video searches. Various on-page as well as off-page factors are taken into consideration when implementing SEO strategies.
When to begin SEO Efforts?
A lot of website owners understand and realise the importance of SEO only after their own websites have been around for a while without giving much traffic or business. Though it’s never too late to invest in SEO, it is recommended to keep SEO goals in mind even before you start planning the website design and content requirements, etc.
Facts about SEO
- No one can guarantee top listings in SEO. If they do, they are not genuine search engine optimisers.
- If you plan to hire an SEO firm to optimise your website, make sure to check their credentials and stay updated with the techniques they are using. This is because a number of people try to take the short cut approach to SEO by using illegal techniques to get higher rankings. Keep in mind that Google can easily identify such websites and ban them from its listings, in the long run.
- SEO efforts become much easier if your website has good quality content.
Some of the commonly used SEO tactics used include researching relevant keywords for the website, using these keywords to write rich content, paying attention to keyword density, using relevant webpage titles, link building including inbound links and good quality reciprocal linking etc.
Remember, SEO is an ongoing process which should be done in continuation with updating the website regularly.
